September is national library card month and there are many reasons that libraries are still relevant and having a library card is important. During the Covid-19 pandemic libraries became an important part of many peoples lives whether it was to borrow books during the stay at home order or for help with questions surrounding a project or job search. Here are some reasons why you should get a library card or renew your current one.
FREE Books
Who doesn’t love free? Libraries hold a wealth of knowledge and much of it is in a book. The nice thing about libraries is that if they don’t have a book that you need, through the interlibrary loan system, they can get it. By using a library you have the world within your grasp!
Different Formats
There is an added benefit that many libraries have started offering since the pandemic: digital books! You can borrow books without leaving the house! For anyone who now has some social anxiety about going out into public having the option of borrowing books without putting pants on is a bonus! There are also audio books offered through library apps. Now you can take your book in the car or on your walk/run.
Not Just Books
Libraries have more than books. Most libraries will offer magazines and newspapers, the use of computers and wifi, and occasionally have other things. Most libraries in Vermont will have snowshoes for the whole family. Many offer passes to the state parks or museums.
There’s no catch
Usually when there are free things there is a catch. You have to sit through a presentation while they try to sell you something or your inbox gets a lot of unwanted email. Libraries don’t do that. They are there for all of us to use and they only ask that we bring our books back on time. How great is that?
Librarians
The best thing about libraries is that they come with Librarians. Are you trying to find out how to write a resume or why leaves change color in the fall? Ask a librarian. If they don’t know the answer they will find it. Librarians are better than Google because they won’t give you bogus search results or tell you paid information. Librarians are pretty cool people. There’s even a movie about them!
