Small victories = Confidence

During a recent Bookmobile stop in Swanton, a little boy named Maverick was bursting with excitement to share his knowledge with us. The story we were reading had lots of “ffffff” sounds in it, with words like fur, fun, fiesta, and fantastic. Maverick pointed to one of the letters and proudly announced that it was an “eff” and made the “ffff” sound. It was the first time he had ever shown his childcare provider that he recognized a letter.

The joy on his face, and on hers, was priceless.

Maverick opened the book himself, ran his finger under the first line, and said, “I know this letter.” He tapped the page again, slower this time, savoring the moment. “F.”

It was one letter. One small moment.
But for us, it was a glimpse of big growth.

These are the moments we see every week on the Bookmobile. A toddler who finally sits through a whole story. A preschooler who remembers a character’s name. A child who chooses the same book again and again because it feels like home. None of it looks flashy. None of it makes headlines. But these tiny steps are exactly how readers are built.

When children begin connecting letter names with their sounds, they are taking the very first step of the alphabetic principle. This is how they start to understand how text works. It takes time to learn this. There are many letters and many sounds to master. As children grow, those letters take on new sounds in different combinations. Think about the difference between “mat” and “mate.” Books help children begin to notice these patterns and hear the changes.

In rural communities like ours, where access to libraries and bookstores can be limited by distance, transportation, or cost, these moments matter even more. When the Bookmobile shows up predictably and joyfully, right where families already are, children get the chance to practice, explore, and grow at their own pace.

Maverick’s provider told us later, “He’s been pretending to read lately. Now he’s picking out letters and sounds on each page. He’s so proud of himself.”

That pride is powerful. It fuels curiosity. It builds confidence. It turns reading from something children have to do into something they want to do. That is where the magic happens.

Your support makes these small moments possible. Every book a child chooses, every story shared in the Bookmobile, every spark of recognition is a building block of lifelong learning. Growth does not always look like big leaps. Sometimes it looks like a little boy whispering “fff” to himself as he discovers what letters can do.

Thank you for helping children across Franklin and Grand Isle counties discover the joy of reading, one small moment at a time.

Help Create More Moments Like Maverick’s

When Maverick proudly pointed to the letter F and said its sound out loud, he wasn’t just recognizing a letter. He was taking one of the very first steps toward becoming a reader. Moments like this happen on the Bookmobile because children have access to books, caring adults, and joyful reading experiences right where they live and learn.

If Maverick’s excitement made you smile, imagine how many more children could experience that same spark with your help.
